questions about showing at the Classic during a pandemic
Recently on our Facebook page, we posted a series of questions and answers about showing during these unique times. We've posted all the information here for easy reading.
NOTE: Our regulations were developed with Ohio, with our Board, our show committee, Brave Horse, and USEF/USDF guidelines. These may be different from other shows. These are OURS. But we hope they will help you adapt to the new showing environment.

q&a
Will I need to wear a face mask at the upcoming Classic?
Yes! We are following USEF/USDF Mandatory Requirements, as well as adhering to any Ohio regulations.
Currently, USEF’s mandate requires MODA “to enforce the use of face masks or face coverings on venue grounds. All staff, grooms, trainers, and participants will be required to wear a face mask or face covering when in a public setting when there is a possibility of being within six feet of another individual. Face masks and face coverings are not required when mounted on a horse.”
We’re looking to our MODA members and all attending trainers to set the standard and demonstrate adherence.
NOTE: if you cannot wear a mask for a medical reason, a letter from your doctor will NOT suffice for our showgrounds. You must apply for, and present, a certificate of dispensation from USEF.
My friend is showing FEI for the first time! Am I allowed to come watch?
Each rider is allowed two support people. A rider who has both a trainer and a groom, unfortunately doesn't have the ability to bring any kind of emotional support people. A rider who only has a trainer OR a groom might bring someone to read their test, hold their jacket, or clap when they are done as long as there are only 2 people with each rider in the competition area.
A person who would like to be able to watch many dressage tests during the show should consider signing up to volunteer as a ring steward, as these are the only people who will have consistent long-term access to the competition arenas and may have opportunities to view parts of the competition around their steward duties. You can complete the volunteer sign-up form at http://www.tinyurl.com/classicvolunteer
Will the stabling be spread out for social distancing at Brave Horse?
Spacing in stabling is dependent upon the number of entries received for the show. Luckily, stabling at Brave Horse is quite spacious. The aisles do not allow for cross-ties and careful individuals can keep their distance getting to and from their horses. Every effort will be made to keep groups close to exits to so they are only negotiating contact within their chosen stabling groups. Larger groups will be concentrated in the inside aisles of the barns with smaller groups and individuals on the outside facing stalls.
USEF strongly discourages stall draping,
A Licking County Sheriff will be on the grounds to monitor adherence for social distancing and mask wearing adherence throughout the show, including in the barns. We advise against the normal stall parties and hang outs.
Am I going to have my temperature taken every day?
In accordance with USEF/USDF regulations:
Volunteers and staff will have their temperature taken with a touchless thermometer at arrival each day.
We expect all competitors and their support staff to self-monitor before, during, and after the Classic.
Upon first arrival at Brave Horse, you will be stopped and your signed liability forms for each person will be collected, and each person will be given a bracelet that must be worn during the entire show.
I’m a bit nervous about showing with the virus around, but I am going to show at the Classic!
What can I do if I see people not wearing masks, or not social distancing?
We’re so glad you’re trusting in MODA for a good show experience, and we want to live up to that. If we all don’t work together to adhere to the rules, not only could MODA face consequences from USEF, but more importantly someone could get sick. We don’t want either of those things to happen!
And while we want you to be honest in your post-show evaluations, we want the opportunity to fix problems while they are happening.
So please, feel free to speak to any volunteer (wearing green shirts!), the sheriff on the grounds, to the manager Vicki Milliron (740-739-0185), or to the TD Joyce Hardesty (913-424-4773) so that we can work with everyone on the ground to make sure that we stay informed, safe, and healthy.
Only by working together can we continue to have a safe and fun show season.
Okay so seriously, what do I need to have with me when I pull in to Brave Horse?
For EVERYONE, riders, coaches, owners, officials, volunteers EVERYONE:
First up: put your mask on. Everyone in your vehicle when you drive up must be masked and must continue to wear their mask while on the grounds.
Next: You (and everyone in your vehicle, competing or not) need to have printed off and completed the following forms: Representation of Current Health, MODA Waiver, USEF Waiver (YES all three, and YES even if you sent them into Show Secretary). You can print the forms HERE
***We understand not everyone will have the ability to print the forms. Forms will be available at the entrance of Brave Horse.***
You (and everyone in your vehicle, competing or not) will then be given a wristband which MUST BE WORN the entire show whenever you are on the grounds.
Volunteers, staff, judges, and officials will additionally have their temperature taken upon arrival every day.
I’ve heard at some other shows that they were not allowing people to take photos, and telling them to take photos down that they posted on social media. Will I able to take my selfie with my ribbons and horse and coach?
While this year we won't be hosting any parties (and ask you not to host any either), we want you to celebrate your trips down centerline, your ribbons, and your goals accomplished! Winslow Photography (our official show photographer) will be on hand to take all your test photos, and you can probably even arrange to have special pics taken by the Iron Horse winners circle.
While we aren’t going to be “selfie police” and scrutinize social media, we hope you will take into consideration that some people not at the show may judge what’s happening at the show based upon personal photos. Please consider wearing masks and social distancing. But yes, post those pics on Insta and Facebook and be sure to include the hashtag #MODAvate and #MidOhioClassic so we can enjoy them too!
Will there be food and drink available to purchase on the Brave Horse grounds? Will there be other vendors?
The Sweet Shoppe will be available in vendor village throughout the entire show for food and drink purchases.
We also plan to have a coffee vendor Friday and Sunday morning back by the barns. We will list nearby restaurants in the show program. Currently, we do not have plans to have other vendors onsite this year. We will list nearby resources for horse equipment and supplies in the show program.
