what are the expectations in the warm-up ring?

[Answered by Nancy Wentz, MODA founding member, current Board Member, and Secretary]
The warm-up ring can be a very intimidating and potentially dangerous place for riders. These tips were reviewed at a recent clinic and are a great list of tips to help navigate.
  • First rule should always be courteous. Treat other riders and coaches and volunteers like you would like to be treated!
  • Second rule is KNOW YOUR TEST TIME! Check in with the ring stewards and see how the tests are running, but know that it is YOUR responsibility to be on time for your test!
  • Be polite. Foul language is never appropriate.
  • No talking or texting on your cell phone while riding.
  • Give right of way to people on horse if you are  on foot.
  • Instructors, coaches and spectators should stand outside the warm-up arena. The warm-up arena is only for those showing.
  • Never lunge your horse in warm-up arena. Always lunge in the assigned lunge arena, not in the warm up arena.
  • Always be aware of surroundings.
  • Mount outside arena or in the middle of the arena - Never mount or dismount on the track.
  • After mounting, enter the warm-up arena and go the direction the other riders are going.
  • Riders should never stop on the track next to the fence to speak with instructor or coach, or other people.
  • Keep a horse’s length between horse, 2 lengths is better.
  • Be careful not to cut off another rider.
  • Pass Left shoulder to Left Shoulder.
  • Never pass between the rail and another rider on track.
  • Instead of passing, consider making a circle or cutting across the arena.
  • Do not circle directly in front of another rider.
  • When turning or stopping, check your "side-view mirror" (glance over your shoulder).
  • Let other riders know where you are going by using your voice and calling your lines.
  • If doing lateral work voice your intent
  • Upper riders traditionally have the right of way, give them space (look for double bridles and upper level movements).
  • If you are having difficulty with your horse, move to center of arena.
  • If a rider falls of dismount immediately and hold onto your horse.
  • A red ribbon in a tail is used to designate that a horse may kick!
  • Take care about using your whip. Don't wave it around which may scare other horses.
  • Try not to let your horse urinate in the warm-up arena.
  • All horses must wear a bridle number at all times in arena and on grounds. Always have bridle number on horse.
  • Note: if you are given 2 numbers it is good to wear both or make sure you put the number on the side of your first turn. (This is very helpful for the scribe.)
